Things are looking great out there today with passing cloud and lots of
smiles. Lots of freshies to be had this morning with keen and eager
skiers and riders out here waiting for Avalanche control work to be
completed before enjoying the fresh white wonder that is Ruapehu.
Avalanche Awareness Courses

Avalanche Awareness Courses are run in conjunction with the Mountain
Safety Council (MSC) for skiers, snowboarders and climbers to help them
gain an appreciation of the avalanche phenomenon and what is needed to
make decisions about personal safety when travelling in avalanche
terrain.

Both sides of the Mountain got fresh dumps of snow last night!
Turoa has now hit the one metre mark, with fresh snow dusting over the
Upper Mountain. Whakapapa also received new snow last night, and is
currently enjoying snow fall at the moment. The forecast is for more
snow to fall in the upcoming days!!

2010 Season Opening Party

A great turnout for our Season Opening Event at SnowPlanet on Queens Birthday Monday.We had "Celebrity Judges", fancy dress, new skiers, old skiers and lots of Prizes.It was a chance to catch up with members we hadn't seen since last season, check our equipment still worked and acclimatise for the approaching winter.

There was an excellent New Member’s evening held at our President’s house last week. Members who have joined in the last couple of years, plus others still on the waiting list, joined with committee members to meet each other and hear about some of the club’s routines and history.Thanks to Alastair and Jill McFarlane for hosting a terrific event, aided by several active committee members.
2010 Work Parties

This year’s work parties were held at both Whakapapa and Ohakune in mid May. Stores and firewood were loaded in to Whakapapa, and both lodges have new soccer tables this year. Ohakune has a new stores room downstairs; and we have also had the bathrooms renovated upstairs – a major facelift!As always, the work parties were a heap of fun and very satisfying to all who took part. Both lodges are looking fantastic – ready for the season to start in just a few weeks!

At our AGM in April, we welcomed our new President Alastair Macfarlane and new committee members Garth Hinton (Vice President) and Corinne Kennedy (catering – Whakapapa).We also thanked our retiring president Greg Knowles and farewelled retiring committee members Madelene Paine, Simon Tompkins, Vee Smit and Claire Baker, who have all given their time generously to the club over past years.

Ngauruhoe Cup Success for TSC members

Congratulations to Charlotte McElroy, Ali Knowles and Anna-Fay Hinton, who came 2nd, 3rd and 10th (respectively) in their categories in the Ngauruhoe Cup last weekend.
A challenging race - with many competitors having to walk up the Valley T bar to the top of the course when the lift broke down!

John Knowles Wins Gold at Mt Hutt

At the National Youth Series at Mount Hutt last Sunday 23 August, John Knowles came first overall in the K2 age group in the Giant Slalom, winning a gold medal.

In the Haensli Cup races last Saturday, our Junior team (Tongariro Top Guns) and our Senior team (Tongariro Terrorists) both scored third place overall, bringing back a handsome shield each.

What a perfect day for our Junior Races! 23 Eager young racers competed hotly for their titles on the Valley highway course. A great picnic thanks to Paul, and followed by a fun treasure hunt which saw TSC young guns tearing round the mountain looking for clues. See the photo gallery for more!

First Days of 2009 Skiing at Turoa

Wow! After some ugly weather on Saturday 20 June (Opening Day), Turoa laid on the best June skiing we've had for years.
Blue skies and good snow cover were the order for most of the week.

2009 Season Opener

TSC's season opening event on Sunday 26 April at Snowplanet was extremely well attended.
Around 55 eager members turned out for a fun dual slalom, team games and a warm up for the season.
Fantastic Prizes were donated by Snow Centre, Wagamama Restaurants, Snowplanet and AMI Insurance.

Whakapapa Building Works Update

Our building repair project at Whakapapa is going extremely well, with the majority of the work complete and coming in under budget.
The Lodge is now looking fantastic, with the damage repaired, new cedar weatherboards freshly painted, window flashings all replaced and interiors regibbed

Turoa Open till November 16!

Great news for ski lovers! RAL has announced that there's so much snow that Turoa will stay open three weeks after Labour Weekend - till 16 November.
Best of all, from October 28, our Ohakune lodge will be open to members and their non member guests at the reduced rate of $20 pp/pn (sans food)!

Despite no lifts operating, Club Captain Moppy turned on a hilarious evening - peppered by crazy games, outrageous haridos, and a mixture of bubbly, crackers, cake, more bubbly and lots of running around in the snow outside the Whakapapa lodge.

The Day (and Night) of the Storm

TSC Guests Amanda and Ali had an interesting time at the lodge during the storm - but later, things got more interesting.
Stephen Boyle had decided to take his boys Finn (7) and Rory (5) for an introduction to the snow last weekend, but none of them had any idea they'd end up rescued by TSC!
